Colorful Vista Orb

This tutorial will focus directly on creating Windows Vista looking orbs. Also, the PSD source file can be downloaded for your viewing pleasure.

Create new image 300 x 300 pixels with a white background.

Create a new layer by clicking Layer > New > Layer or Shift+Ctrl+N
Give the layer a name, preferably something meaningful E.g. Circle or Orb.

Now we are going to create the base for the orb.
Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool and draw a circle in the newly created layer. Remember when you are creating your circle hold down SHIFT while dragging as it will keep the circle in perspective.

From the colour palette select colour #276412
Select the Gradient tool as shown below and then select the gradient editor.

Change the colour of the transparency end to #B6F039 and increase the opacity to 100%
You should now have bar that looks like the following.

Fill the circle with linear gradient by dragging from top to bottom.

Create a new layer by clicking Layer > New > Layer or Shift+Ctrl+N
Give the layer a name, preferably something meaningful e.g. bottom glow.
Select the Gradient Tool and the select Radial Gradient.
Select the gradient tool and prepare a white to transparent gradient.
Drag from bottom to top to fill the selected area with gradient.
Go to Select Filter>Blur>Motion blur and enter 1 for blur distance and 90 for angle.
Go to Select Filter>Blur>Gaussian blur and enter 18 for blur radius.
Set Layer Opacity to 88%.
Move your Layer object till it appears to be in the correct position.
Ctrl + Left click the Circle layer to make a selection.
Go to Select > Inverse Then press delete to get rid of anything that could be seen overlapping onto the white background.
Make sure ‘bottom highlight’ layer is selected and press the Delete key on your keyboard to delete the shape area outside the orb.
Ctrl + D to deselect.

Create a new layer by clicking Layer > New > Layer or Shift+Ctrl+N.
Give the layer a name, preferably something meaningful E.g. top glow.
Ctrl + Left click the Circle layer to make a selection, go to Select>Modify>Contract and type 6 in the input box.
Change the colour Palette to white (Foreground).
Select the gradient tool and prepare a white to transparent gradient.
Drag from top to bottom to fill the selected area with gradient.
Go to Select > Inverse, Click the Bottom Layer and press delete. This will remove a little section from bottom layer. Press Ctrl+D to deselect.
That is basis for creating a Look a Like Orb.

Create a new layer by clicking Layer > New > Layer or Shift+Ctrl+N
Give the layer a name, preferably something meaningful E.g. Windows Logo
Open the Vista logo or whatever you can find to fit.
Select > All
Go to your orb creation, on the newly created layer .
Go to Edit > Paste
Use the free transform feature to increase or decrease the size so it will fit your image.
Go to Image > Adjustments > Auto Levels. This will make the Logo stand out a little better.
Double click the Logo Layer for Layer Style Properties
Select > Drop Shadow > multiply > 30% Opacity and set Size 15px.
I also adjusted the Brightness/Contrast of the Circle Layer to make the green a little darker for better result.

Works with other colours as well. So play with the colours that you see are worthwhile.
